In a world where we’re becoming more mindful of what we put in our bodies, it only makes sense to consider what we use around our homes too. Many conventional cleaning products are loaded with harsh chemicals that can irritate your skin, lungs, and even disrupt hormones. The good news? You can make powerful, non-toxic cleaners with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen!
Here are three of my favorite DIY natural cleaning recipes to help you ditch the chemicals and freshen up your space the healthy way:
1. All-Purpose Citrus Cleaner
Best for: Kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, glass, and even floors.
Ingredients:
-
Peels from 2–3 oranges or lemons
-
1 cup white distilled vinegar
-
1 cup water
-
10 drops essential oil (optional — tea tree, lemon, or lavender are great!)
-
A glass spray bottle
Directions:
-
Fill a jar with citrus peels and pour vinegar over them until they’re fully submerged.
-
Seal the jar and let it sit for 1–2 weeks.
-
Strain out the peels and pour the vinegar into a spray bottle.
-
Add 1 cup water and essential oil, if using.
-
Shake gently before each use.
Why it works: Citrus peels contain natural oils that help cut through grease and grime, while vinegar disinfects and deodorizes.
2. Baking Soda Scrub
Best for: Sinks, tubs, toilets, and stovetops.
Ingredients:
-
1/2 cup baking soda
-
1 tablespoon castile soap (or dish soap)
-
10 drops essential oil (peppermint or eucalyptus work great)
-
A small jar
Directions:
-
Mix the baking soda and castile soap in a small bowl or jar until it forms a paste.
-
Add essential oil and stir well.
-
Scoop out with a sponge or cloth and scrub surfaces, then rinse clean.
Why it works: Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that lifts dirt and stains, while castile soap breaks down grease and buildup.
3. Natural Glass & Mirror Cleaner
Best for: Windows, mirrors, glass tables, and shower doors.
Ingredients:
-
1 cup distilled water
-
1 cup white vinegar
-
1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (helps prevent streaks)
-
5 drops lavender or lemon essential oil (optional)
-
A spray bottle
Directions:
-
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle.
-
Shake before use and spray directly onto glass surfaces.
-
Wipe with a lint-free cloth or newspaper for a streak-free shine.
Why it works: Vinegar cuts through smudges and grime, while alcohol evaporates quickly to leave glass spotless.
Bonus Tip: Always test your DIY cleaners on a small area first, especially on delicate surfaces like granite or marble (vinegar can etch stone!).
